Of 41 rivers in Cape Breton that historically sustained spawning populations, only 3 currently are above or near to spawning requirements. Some contributory causes are well known: over harvesting (legal and illegal), habitat destruction, long range and local pollution, introductions of non-native species, and changes in predator populations."
