Ocean technology is a major driver of the oceans economy. Local companies are active not only in the offshore oil and gas sector, but have also expanded into international markets by developing and deploying innovative ocean technologies. Modern ships and offshore production rigs are equipped with instrumentation that enables the monitoring of all activities from a central control room. As well, ocean observation systems provide real-time information about ocean conditions or seismic activity. Worldwide, these systems are used to monitor vessel traffic and a variety of other variables for environmental and security purposes. Technologists with a specialization in ocean instrumentation are an integral part of the ocean industries workforce and will have the knowledge and skills to install, operate and maintain these systems.
